LED downlights
Downlights do most of the work in a modern home, and small differences in colour, beam and dimming show up across a whole ceiling. They are worth choosing carefully, because you will live with them for years.

What to look for
Colour temperature
Warm white suits living rooms and bedrooms. Natural white suits kitchens, bathrooms and work areas. Colour-selectable models let you decide after installation.
Dimming
A dimmable downlight needs a compatible dimmer. Check the pair together, especially when replacing lights on an existing circuit.
Insulation
If your ceiling has insulation, look for an IC-4 rated downlight, which is designed to be covered by it.
Cut-out size
Replacing old halogens? Measure the existing hole first, so the new fitting covers it without patching the ceiling.
This is general guidance. Fixed wiring must be installed by a licensed electrician.
