Outdoor lighting
Outdoor lights have to look good and survive sun, rain and salt air. Choosing well is about the rating and material as much as the style.

What to look for
IP rating
The IP rating tells you how well a fitting keeps out dust and water. IP44 is a common minimum for sheltered areas, and more exposed spots call for higher.
Materials
Near the coast, look for marine-grade or corrosion-resistant finishes.
Sensors and timers
Motion sensors suit security lighting. Dusk-to-dawn sensors suit paths and entries.
Neighbours
Aim light down and keep it warm. It is easier on the eye and on the people next door.
This is general guidance. Fixed wiring must be installed by a licensed electrician.
