Oyster lights
The oyster is the quiet workhorse of the Australian home. It sits flush to the ceiling, spreads light widely and needs no recessed space, which makes it an easy upgrade.

What to look for
Low ceilings
Oysters sit close to the ceiling, so they suit rooms where a pendant would be in the way.
Replacing an old fitting
Measure the old base first. A new oyster that is at least as wide will cover any marks on the ceiling.
Wet areas
For bathrooms and laundries, look for a suitable IP rating and check the rules for where the light sits.
Brightness
Compare lumens rather than watts. Lumens tell you how much light you actually get.
This is general guidance. Fixed wiring must be installed by a licensed electrician.
